One of the especially significant features of the hIOmon File I/O Performance Monitor is its unique ability to collect, display, and export summarized I/O operation information. These "summarized" I/O operation performance metrics (which are aggregated by the hIOmon I/O Monitor software component at the time that it actually observes the occurrence of the I/O operations) are an innovative feature of hIOmon that can dramatically reduce the overhead associated with the collection, display, export, and subsequent post-processing of I/O operation performance metrics.

Moreover, the aggregated I/O operation information can be collected upon a user-specified periodic basis (e.g., every 10 seconds), when the file is closed (or hIOmon detects that it has become inactive), or upon a user-specified "alert threshold" (e.g., when a total read I/O operation count, a write maximum response time, a total amount of read data transferred, etc. is detected by the hIOmon I/O Monitor).

The novel ability to gather summarized I/O operation metrics enables you to avoid the overhead, effort, time and cost that can be incurred by (often manually) having to handle, manipulate, search, and subsequently process reams upon reams of individual I/O operation trace data.  The hIOmon File I/O Performance Monitor makes it easy and quick for you to simply focus upon those particular I/O operation metrics that are of interest to you.  Finding your "Top Ten" files, processes, or devices has never been easier!

hIOmon provides a robust set of summarized I/O operation metrics that include not only the basic performance metrics, but extend much further to include random/sequential access metrics, system cache metrics, optional "physical device extended metrics", "fragmented file I/O metrics", and much more. 

hIOmon Summarized I/O Operation Metrics

The hIOmon File I/O Performance Monitor can collect and display summarized I/O operation metrics upon an individual, specific basis for:

  • Files (i.e., for an individual, specific file).

  • Processes/applications (i.e., aggregated metrics for all files that were monitored by the hIOmon I/O Monitor and to which the respective, particular process performed an I/O operation monitored by the hIOmon I/O Monitor).

  • Devices (i.e., a "Device Summary" upon an individual device basis that represents for a particular device the overall aggregate of all summarized file I/O operation metrics for all files (and only those files) that were monitored by the hIOmon I/O Monitor and which reside upon the respective device). 

The  table below provides a categorization of the various I/O operation Summary metrics that can be collected, displayed and even exported by the hIOmon File I/O Performance Monitor.  The "Field Name" and "Number" values shown within this table correspond respectively to those defined within the "File I/O Performance Summary Export" field descriptions provided within Appendix A of the "hIOmon User Guide" document.

NOTE:   The collection, display and export of summarized I/O operation metrics requires the hIOmon Summarized Data Licensing Option.
