File I/O Performance Monitor Offers Users/Integrators/ISVs
Unparalleled Capabilities for Controlling/Retrieving
 Robust File-Level Metrics

BOULDER, Colorado August 18, 2003 — hyperI/O LLC, the file I/O performance monitoring expert, announced today that its industry-leading hIOmon™ File I/O Performance Monitor now includes Windows® Management Instrumentation (WMI) support.  The WMI support promotes ease-of-use and enables broad, industry-standard access to the most robust set of file I/O performance metrics currently available, which only hIOmon™ provides.

“We are pleased to announce and make currently available Version 3.0 of our innovative hIOmon™ File I/O Performance Monitor, which now includes WMI support,” said Tom West, President of hyperI/O LLC.  “Based upon the Common Information Model (CIM) and in association with the Web-Based Enterprise Management (WBEM) industry initiative, WMI offers a variety of programming interfaces along with extensive scripting support.  End-users and management applications alike, including Storage Resource Management (SRM) solutions, can collect information about as well as control the various managed objects within the enterprise, all within a standardized manner using published APIs supported by Microsoft®.”

“Through its WMI support, hIOmon™ brings file-level I/O performance measuring and monitoring to the forefront, enabling more prudent and sophisticated storage management decisions and policies that are based upon empirical, more tangible metrics,” said West.  “Since, by some estimates, less than 10% of the total data is accessed most of the time, understanding I/O performance and patterns at the file level is key in terms of data life-cycle management and placement optimization within the storage hierarchy, SAN, NAS, etc.  Bottom line is that hIOmon™, now with WMI support, can help get more out of existing as well as new hardware.”

hIOmon™ Benefits

hIOmon™ is a software package that provides a variety of important benefits, including the ability to better diagnose and understand storage access performance problems, to verify and ensure that required levels of performance (Quality-of-Service) are being met, to evaluate emerging storage technologies and proposed improvements to the performance of computer systems, and to help reduce storage management costs.  With the incorporation of WMI support, end-users, integrators and Independent Software Vendors alike will find it even easier to tap into the hIOmon™ agent.  ‘Out-of-the-box’ features also include a Java™-based GUI, CLI support, alert capabilities with System Event Log support, both detailed and summary data on an individual file basis together with both real-time and replay display modes, along with support for both the Windows® Performance and System Monitors and a CSV-file export capability.

As but one example, users/applications armed with the extensive, rich set of file I/O performance metrics that only hIOmon™ provides can validate and continually verify that those steps taken to maximize disk storage utilization are indeed of benefit.  Such steps include identifying ‘hot files’ and moving files around the storage hierarchy, SAN, NAS, etc. to improve performance by making the best use of newly purchased hardware or without spending IT dollars on new hardware.  Moreover, these benefits can be substantiated in terms of actual performance metrics specific to key files and the associated applications. With its many features and capabilities (along with an extremely efficient architecture), hIOmon™ answers the question:  “How fast are your files?”™ in terms of a variety of metrics, including response time, I/O count, I/O rate, data transfer rate, queue depth and idle time, plus real-time, metric-based file list sorts and more.
